Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) classes are run by our Certified Personal Trainer and Coach Andrew. As a student, you will learn the principles and systems behind the techniques so you have the ability to develop your own style, creativity, and techniques. Andrew likens his teaching style to the well-known quote, "give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime."
No more than two new techniques will be learned per class to ensure that you acquire a deep understanding of the principles and techniques taught in each class. Techniques will be reviewed for 2-3 classes for that same reason.
There will be no structured warm-ups before class. Students are encouraged to come to class early to warm up in order to spend the entirety of class time learning BJJ. In addition, often time the techniques are enough to warm up students before starting oppositional work. Class starts with practicing and teaching techniques (30-45 minutes), then oppositional drilling (drilling techniques and positions against resistance) for 20 minutes, and then rolling (BJJ sparring) for 20-30 minutes. Finally, each class will include a game to encourage students to hone their skills in a fun, lighthearted, and competitive environment.
